Lecture “Philosophy of Penalties”

The Research Unit “European Policies and Democracy” (the precursor to CEDLAW) organized and had the honor to host at the University of Macedonia the esteemed Justice Mr. Antonis Tsalaportas, President of the three-member Board of Directors of the Court of Appeal of Thessaloniki, to give a lecture on “Philosophy of Penalty” on Wednesday, March 28, 2018.

Mr Tsalaportas analyzed the philosophy of the sentences being given by a judicial officer and, in particular, the factors taken into account in the event of the law’s discretion regarding the length and type of the sentence, referring to his extensive personal experience. At the end of the lecture, the audience was able to ask questions and discuss with Mr. Tsalaportas.

The lecture was organized by the Administrator of the Research Unit and PhD candidate, Alexandros Kyriakidis in the context of the course “Recent and Contemporary Political Philosophy” of the Department of International and European Studies of the University (of Macedonia), focusing on the different schools of thought on the manner and purpose of giving a sentence (e.g. Thomas Hobbes), being taught by the Head of the Unit and Associate Professor, Mr. Ioannis Papadopoulos.
